How to Answer Who is Jesus?

As we gather with families, friends, and co-workers for holiday parties, our conversation can settle on recipes for the chocolate cake with cinnamon buttercream frosting. Topics land on gifts we have bought and often drift to the gifts we hope to find under the tree on Christmas morning.

Although Jesus is the reason for the season, we are easily distracted. If our eyes are not intentionally on the lookout for opportunities, we may miss important moments.  But even if the moment arises when someone asks us a direct question about Christ, our tongue is tangled, we stammer, and stutter.  Sure most people agree that Jesus was a religious leader, but not all accept Him as Savior.  We quickly scan the situation and because there is a risk involved. We may end up saying nothing at all.

We worry that the person listening may be offended. So we miss the opportunity to explain how Jesus is God. During Christmas time most people accept that Jesus became a human baby, but if you mention that he died by crucifixion…the look on their face says you stole their Christmas joy. They don’t want to think about Jesus being buried, let’s just wait til Easter.  But the fact that He rose from the dead proves that he is the Savior of the world.

Here are some handy bible verses to help navigate your way through any spiritual Christmas discussions with family, friends, and co-workers.

1. Jesus Christ is God.

There is no other explanation for all the miracles that Christ performed.

Jesus Christ himself explained to his disciples that He was with God the Father in the beginning.  Listen to his prayer below:

When Jesus had spoken these things, He lifted up His eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son may glorify You. For You granted Him authority over all humanity, so that He may give eternal life to all those You have given Him. Now this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent. I have glorified You on earth by accomplishing the work You gave Me to do. And now, Father, glorify Me in Your presence with the glory I had with You before the world existed. John 17: 1-5 BSB

2. Jesus is the Son of God.

Jesus explained that He is the Son of God and that God in Heaven was his Father (John 5:18).

3. Jesus and His Father are one.

He even explained how He and His Father are one (John 10:30).

Peter believed that Christ is the Son of God (John 6:69). And I do too, but what about you?  Who do you think Jesus is? Who does your family think He is?  Or your friends or co-workers?

4. Jesus was without sin.

Do They Know Jesus was without sin? It’s hard to imagine, but it is true.

The Messiah was described in Isaiah 53 and Peter and Paul testified that Jesus fulfilled it.

“He committed no sin,

and no deceit was found in His mouth.”

When they heaped abuse on Him,

He did not retaliate;

when He suffered, He made no threats,

but entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly.

He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree,

so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.

“By His stripes you are healed.” (1 Peter 2:21-22).

I know…I know…Not a safe Christmas topic.

But Forgiveness is a Great Christmas Topic!

5. Jesus Forgives Sin.

Since only God can Forgive Sin, so Jesus must be God.

In case you encounter someone who is truly interested in what the bible says you can point them to where Jesus healed the paralyzed man.

When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven (Matthew 9:2). 

Everyone wants to forgive family members at Christmas time, so inviting Jesus power to heal all the hurts involved is needed. And just in case your family is as dysfunctional as mine. (Sorry mom!  I love you bunches!)

6. Jesus performed miracles.

Not only has Jesus healed the sick in the bible but he has healed me, my sons, and my husband.

Our belief has power, if you don’t believe me…read below:

Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! As you have believed, so will it be done for you (Matthew 8:13).” 

Every time I read that, I’m reminded how important our thought life is! 

And if you are the one hosting the party, don’t worry about not having enough food for everyone.

Jesus fed 4,000 hungry people with seven loaves of bread (Mark 8: 5-7).

And if your family is grieving a loved one this year like my family.

Take Heart, Jesus is life.

Jesus gave life to a widow’s only son who had died  (Luke 7: 11-16).

I know you are thinking that is well and good but your loved one isn’t on earth any longer.  But the part we need to pay attention to is Jesus gave life.

Where ever death may be, Jesus gives life.

And not just temporary life on earth, but eternal life (John 17: 1-5).

Safe Topics For Holiday Party

Christmas is the time to celebrate that Jesus Christ, who is God, Became a man.

We rejoice because The Word became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14).

Did you know that Jesus’ birth was predicted 800 years before he was born?

In Isaiah 7:14 it states, “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and she will call Him Immanuel.”

The prophecy was fulfilled when  “the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High (Luke 1:30-31).

Do You Believe Jesus Christ’s Claims?

One of the most important gifts we can receive this year is receiving Jesus Christ to be your Lord and Savior. Have you ever done this?

It is easier to say that we believe in Jesus, than to open our entire hearts and our life to Him. It is easier to be conformed to this world and say the acceptable pleasantries during a holiday party than to speak the truth.

May this Christmas be the perfect time for you to be confident to share what you have “seen and heard.”

Jesus’ Prayer For All Believers:

“I am not asking on behalf of them alone, but also on behalf of those who will believe in Me through their message, that all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I am in You. May they also be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.

I have given them the glory You gave Me, so that they may be one as We are one— I in them and You in Me—that they may be perfectly united, so that the world may know that You sent Me and have loved them just as You have loved Me.

Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me where I am, that they may see the glory You gave Me because You loved Me before the foundation of the world.

Righteous Father, although the world has not known You, I know You, and they know that You sent Me. And I have made Your name known to them and will continue to make it known, so that the love You have for Me may be in them, and I in them (John 17: 20 – 25).”
