Who is Your Hero?

Heroes come in many different shapes and sizes. They are courageous and can be found on the battlefield fighting the good fight of faith. Heroes show discretion and integrity for justice.

God’s Word Translation Zephaniah 3:17  The LORD your God is with you. He is a hero who saves you. He happily rejoices over you, renews you with with love, and celebrates over you with shouts of joy.

Who Do You Look Up to?

Three of my favorite heroes are Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. The King ordered whenever the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe were heard, all the people were expected to fall down and worship a gold statue.  Even though everyone around was following the command, these three men refused to worship anything other than the one true God. Even when the king gave them another opportunity to bow down or be thrown into the fiery furnace, they claimed “If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty. But even if he doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.” (Daniel 3:17 – 18 NLT).

I look up to these men because there I desire to worship my LORD instead of idols that the world chooses.  We may not bow down to gold, but we sure do spend long hours to earn money.  We even wait weeks in anticipation to watch Avenger movies about fictitious heroes who save the world.  But there is only one LORD and Savior who saves: Jesus Christ.

But these incredible events aren’t just events that occurred in the past.  Jesus Christ is still in the business of saving lives.  Time website reported that Brad Brown, a hospital chaplain in Paradise California, loaded countless people into ambulances to evacuate from a fire.  However, two patients from intensive care and one already under hospice care were not able to fit into the departing ambulances.

Brad did not hesitate to load the non-ambulatory patients into his own mini van. However, the evacuation did not go as planned.  Instead his van stood idle in gridlock traffic for hours.  Cars ahead of him burst into flames from the most destructive fire in California’s history. He described the sound of the fire, the black smoke so thick that he couldn’t see 20 feet down the road.  Embers fell on the van’s hood, but he couldn’t drive forward. So, he prayed.

A bulldozer appeared moving cars out of the roadway and he pulled into the parking lot of a church.  The building was just a huge fireball and safety officials were directing him to a larger parking lot farther away from the building.  But there was a wall of fire blocking his car. Like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, he faced the fire and trusted Jesus to save him and the occupants inside his van. He drove through the fiery flames! He knew that the God he served was able to save him. But even if he doesn’t, he wasn’t allowing fear to stop him from moving forward.

After many hours of trying to find unblocked roads to leave town, his patients finally arrived at a hospital.

How does Your Hero Point You Towards Jesus?

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were bound and thrown into the fiery furnace. King Nebuchadnezzar looked on and was amazed when he saw four men walking around unbound, and unharmed in the furnace. He even exclaimed that one looked like a son of the gods!

Like Brad Brown, we may face fiery trials of our own.  However, if we pray to our LORD Jesus, we are not alone. Jesus is able to save you from the heat and the flames. He will stand with you and when you walk out not a hair on your head will be singed, your clothes will not be burned, and you won’t even smell like smoke.

Who are you pointing towards Jesus?

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego pointed the satraps, prefects, governors, and royal advisers to the one true God.

Brad Brown and his 16 year old son, Jaron, who also escaped from the fire in a separate evacuation both pointed everyone who listens. They give all the glory to God who heard their prayers.

3 Things to remember during a fiery trial

1. Whenever you face danger whether it is cancer, diabetes, or a fire storm;  your God is able to save.
2. Remember that God has legions of angels at his disposal to protect his servants.
3. When in danger, plead to him for protection by praying.  Do not rely on your strength alone.

May I pray for you?

Heavenly Father, You love me even when my heart quivers.

You draw me to your word.

I am waiting and listening for you as a friend.

My heart fills with joy when I hear you speak.

Your power is mightier than the deadliest cancer.

Your hand removes destruction.

You restore my loved ones health.

My heart sings your praise.

My praises and thankful prayers delight you.

My heart belongs to you, Jesus.

You are my joy.

You are the greatness of my life.

You have cared for me all my life.

Revealing your son to me.

Thank you for giving me the choice to be your child.

I am grateful to receive you as light in my darkness.

I will praise how you work in my life.

How you give life to my loved ones day by day.
